5 day Poetry Challenge Day 5 – The Uniqueness of Being Unique

Written circa November 2006, this is the last post for the challenge. It feels good to look back at where I’ve come from as a writer. Thank you for reading,

Every word spoken on this earth is a ritual

Unless it’s inspired by the divine at the time, it cannot be defined as truly individual

Uniqueness is the relative of beauty desired by all

If true love is unconditional

Are the partakers truly unique individuals?

Experience is definitions fly on the wall in the documentaries of our lives

But we find uniqueness essence cannot be repeated

Humans are fruit smoothies – mixture of common features

We try to emphasise unique things, a lot of our plus points

From our personal couture to our cultural standpoints

Pointing skywards

Common concepts are the paternal subtexts that drive us

Culture is our car

Exquisitely designed without a need for eyes

For unique defines not I but who we are

Fever

Straight laces and jazz faces

The jack boot to the face to the pavement

Just another one erased

Binary bindings say war is thicker than blood

Sharks in hoods can’t clear their cache

Crop wasted like the Qur’an on hardened atheists

Yet blacks bear cross movements with little hope of resurrection

Minstrel mazes and court cases

Sour notes swish poor paintings

Beaten paths falling like gay pastors

Recorded on tape yet don’t own the masters

Chicanery air dropped

Drones divert and dividing clasps faster

What change did you expect on capital?

Hell we shall overcome

Soundtrack to crumbling paths

What’s a non-believers call to prayer?

Guerilla jungle fever or corporate chess

Guess they’re gonna tool those left

Circular arguments square rooted

Another mother weeps

Candles melt into vigilante passions

General lies and federal eyes stare down the truth

Demons fear Jesus not bullets

What’s a blind man to compass?

Rebellion or just is

Unrequited love leaves tortured souls

Hashtag justice

Dramatic excuse for a tragedy

They don’t know what lame is

Warmongers avoid life support

Turntablist journalists

Tear gas terms of endearment

Smokeholds, choking given as hand rearing

Comply or die?

Comply or die!

Old jokes breathe new headstones

Murals of mockery manifested

No indictment from dim bulbs

Manufactured entrapment

Circus clowns got us fox hunting

Peace is a contestant bestowed on ex factors

Agents of shield marvel

Brothers gaming sisters instead of the master system

Laws raped by police force

Unmasked resistance

Protests anonymous

Do the right thing, going viral or posthumous

We shall overcome sounds monotonous

Malcolm, Christ, Luther

Which Martin will you be plotted to

Who wants justice?

Who wants justice?

Just us?

Just Cause

It seems blues brothers love to give the youth a shot

Star bucks and donuts will get them back on the clock

Hard hearts too cold to let the jailhouse rock

With so many stories landing I’m losing the plot

Are the killings indiscriminate?

Are we born Criminals?

Are they shopping with body bags?

Are we looking for excuses?

It seems order pickers are easily recruited

I guess bullets are quicker than nooses

With the mixed fruits this con fuses

I guess bullets are best for a nuisance

Are facts always what truth is?

Some we live and let die while others say prove it

Were Eric Garner and Mike Brown, rotten fruit picked?

Like tunnel vision to a Cyclops, what WE feel is lucid

Then again….who’s WE?

Justice or Retribution?

If the news is the Bible and every tweet or status revelations

Should we consider what makes us demons or angels?

If you were the shooter, the thief or the rapist, have you got a right to rehabilitation?

Is justice what we live for or is retribution too fascinating?

If you were the shooter, thief or rapist,

Does a served conviction demand social castration?

Who should decide where you will pose danger?

Will your past be the past or an indelible stain?

Can you ever prove you’ve changed?

If forgiveness is a choice and nobody is perfect, how do we decide those that are worth it?

If the public eye is the product our passion or profession has gained in earnest

Are we now God’s among men?

Is raising the nation now our reasonable service?

Is the freedom to fall, freedom to make abominable life choices not human?

Since we’re all executioners before we’re the judge and the jury, what is the solution?

Justice or retribution?

Embrace

Embrace Life

Time is the oxygen we allow our bleeding to breathe in
So I embrace the pain of another to prepare them for healing
When cut to the core with energy re ceded
Fruits of laboured pain I eat in exchange for the favour of grace
And
Salvation from the sins of the past that maim the present
Derailing the tensions that prevail as the lessons that only seek to lessen
So knowing the power to impeach and set precedents needs more than rhetorical tenements delivered with eloquence
I say listen to the memories given reverence and residence in your edifice
Evict your fear of change like a rent dodging resident, without sentiment
Embrace hope like a new pregnancy in spite of miscarrying triplets
You can only drink what you allow to flow through your inlet
(And) If not filtered you falter, your gaze on destiny alters
Until you’re feeling forced to drive on the wheels of misfortune
Floundering in the forest of the forlon, war torn by the dim light

(Yet) my in sight drinks from glasses doubled in clarity.
So every head shot is a meteoric light telling dystopia not to marry me
Utopia is a pharisee until we conclude lamentations
Hesitation is not self preservation until But They, is deleted from our recitation
For convenient flagellation conceals contamination
Some who say time is a healer refuse to watch what they’re saying
With the mind they’re paying, as games they’re playing
Life’s not a lottery. it’s just a wall for painting
Pain may be your undercoat so decorate with your celebration
The why and how wont add up so detonate your decimation
Replace your But They’s with For I,
Forgiveness, for love, for health for strength
I embrace pain like a bad disciple.
Betraying it with the priceless knowledge that it is no love rival.
To be made wise with experience means pain is a chapter in your bible
That many misinterpret and create a religion like disaster was their idol
You’re a lamb to the slaughter if you buy bull
Death precedents canot give life to your revival
Stealing time to cry is not a crime if you value freedom through peace of mind at all.
So open your chamber of secrets and empty your back full of knives
Knowing your scars are part of the painting
Don’t dam the flow claiming your assets will be liquidated
I say embrace pain like a trigger and squeeze it until the ammunition is asphixiated
From soul to soul I hope to mitigate your evanesence
Embracing your pain and killing it, to make you great through resurrection
See the politics of living dictate survival’s a general election
Some histories we repeat because we wont scatch the record

We’d rather dance to our beatings till we’re prey without ceasing
Ignoring the truth that our spirits fruits bare in season
I call it a faith crime when we pray without seizing
When taking chances to count our blessings, to the creator is pleasing
You can only claim the blessing of an heir if you’re breathing
Need feeding? Believe him!
Life words like seeds from the other trees in Eden,
Will you not eat them or will you ask… What would heathens do?
A question rarely tended, if ever thought of.
We drink the lies of many authors like they were last orders.
Picturing Jesus drowning his sorrows with a glass full of water
Instead of walking through the tempest like Kate’s pen game was his daughter
Ignoring the needs of our heart, doing what folk think we ought to
Being heady and high minded will not make you highly thought of.
Your embrace of pain can turn a sniper to sawn off
So make a decision before you tell me your story
If it’s gory to gory and you’re the bullet of this one shot
Do you know your tools can enrich the plot
Your intimacy can harvest the better ending
So are you a gardener preparing for new seasons
Or are you just pre tending
With your embrace

Goodness, Gracious, Me

As clocks tick,
boxes dip
Another click
A buttoned lip
Eyes shut
The solemn drips
Loosening grip
A name that slips
Away
They
All want us to kneel
Accentuate real
To hurt and to heal
To birth and to feel
Their pain
Again?
They want to us to feel
Their pain again
They want to us to feel
Their pain again
Where is outrage
They want the grief front page
Publicity umbrage
They’ve got it so flaunting
Dead sons aunts and.daughters
Yet I’m getting bored of
This game
They want to us to feel
Their pain
They want to us to feel
Their pain again
How can this be real
When told what to feel
Not sold on the deal
For real
like being force fed a cake
That I didn’t bake
They wants jaws to ache
Whole souls to be raked
Yet my soul is being raped
By choices I didn’t make
How many addicts do you need!
For your sympathies
I’ve no blood left to bleed
Or place for my feet
With that left for me
I barely can be
So please comprehend
I cannot pretend
That I truly stand
With all and hold hands
As
Grief stans for yours
My release could be raw
Yet I know for sure
You’ll be exhausted to Stan
All mine

Confession

Forgive me father for I have been sinning
I have grown used to the taste of losing
Not winning
My tongue lost the strength to spit
I have been chewed up by home truths
Flavour sucked out by excuses
I have a humans right to live
My spirit’s bruised with my humans right abuses
The truth is
I’ve had so many bibles I lost my religion
Been cut up by independence
Call it indecision
Naturally short sighted
Drunk from half empty glasses to find my vision
When I thought I’d had my chips
You’ve sent me soul fishing
In murky ponds where I don’t belong
The boat that rocked has been my cradle
It’s been a grave moment
I’ve been a victim
Been a baby
Rape alarms like a lady
Constructive criticism would detonate me
Father i blame you for not being there when I needed you
Now forgive me I pray thee
Forgive me I pray thee
Let my convictions bow their heads for the guillotine
I need to slay me
So forgive me father for my actors part of
The plays that flopped and the songs that never charted
The principles I bartered for illegitimate babies I fathered
Stretching my arms like Moses to simply break a piece of my heart off
Fed it to mongrels as bread crumbs
Played in tongues like sand dunes
God was not present when some temples sang in tune
Boo da sin tax was not a pleasant or peaceful one
I’ve learned to change my calendar cos after several dates another piece was gone
It’s not the one, neither were they.
How many times have you got to be brought to your knees before you learn how to pray
So now I say, father forgive me for I have sinned
I have poisoned my air conditioning with a brazen foul wind
I have broken 7 seals by boiling the sea of change to a thin
Vapour
Been enslaved by the paper
Cuts, selective memories like super man tore his cape off
Left myself unprotected like a boxer fighting with the tape off
Gone digital with my misery cos apathy tore my tape up
They say time is money, with every groan I earned a pay cut
Walked around with open wounds this warrior fought and learned how to stay cut
Bathed in salt cos I thought it would show heart if you heard my pains love
Forgive me
For I am sin
I have broken the promises I once held dear within
I am the snake within my grass
The eve with in my garden
I am stone tablets with your commandments
In fact just stone hearted
Drowning in waters that I’ve charted
For me, I am martyred
So father forgive me
As I do

Who got tha Props

My umi says Shine your light on the world……
They made us hate our self and love their wealth
Shine your light for the world to see…….
Dear Madam Noire I want to be a world star
Hip Hop Hip Hop
We made us hate ourselves
Now we’re in rude health
It hits hard, hits hard
Divide by stealth
Now we gotta freeze hell
Big drop, Pit Stop,

I said
Do you know who hates black people?
Black people
In spite of a rich history we broadcast our misery
Our position be flippancy
If nobody knows the program why should folk love our frequency?
Instead of calling each other hoes and pimps why don’t folk play the game secretly
It’s Maybach Music
Never the corporation
So many crabs on the sure are we a cancer nation?
A plantation, with foundation
O#, so sick of sick with it I think I need some sanitation
Seems hate is our salvation
Why do we baptise in lies if we’re only saving face
I lift my hands in Oprah Praise
To Truth

Afro trendsetters only ever strived to be better
Yet we pray for equality like Eskimos for hot weather
Chicken don’t love eggs fried,
So hot under the collar it’s like your friend with your ex I
Speak life to race questions if we’re going to be winning
So many us and them mindsets we’re scratching records not spinning
Gunning, running and grinning, romancing and sprinting
Lancing the sinning when its really challenging perception
One true definition of blackness? Now that’d be immaculate inception

So mixed up we’re a mixed race with time to hate on the mixed face
Cooking souls like jerk chicken unless their hot on a mix tape,
Barack Obama, black father, white mama, married black so why bother
If he’d married Monica Lewinsky would he still be so honoured?
Why are we still so bothered it’s time I shot the songbird
Your weave comes from east Asia so you ain’t a boss you’re a product
A mollusc talking bollocks who strains for a look
Ain’t nothing worse than a half baked crook

So beat up by blackness I’m a maybe seal
If I love Garvey’s and Heidi Klums does that make me less real
Exercising demons for Jesus to take the wheel
Lets to talk about sex baby
Or I wont know how to feel because lately
All I hear is, it’s ok to like white people
As longs it’s the right people
Yet the way of these Chinese whispers I wonder if it’s ok to like people?
See lately…..I wonder could you be the one’s to save me
And after all ….
I promise to take the knives out my back when I learn to eat with your forked
Tongue
Can’t we all get along?
Respect one another?
I’m so enlightened I’m like Beyonce
Next album cover

I should of spat into a rubber cos you’d have heard me right?
Prefer to read me wrong
Someone could take me out tonight
Yet see for every open mike a brother’s lost his life
To a brother who got too hyped
Now his baby mother be turning dike
Wonder are the kids alright
Is the flash of a gun to be their only light
My fish for answers yields only tripe and I, I, I
Just can’t stomach it
I hate this function room
A bulb can grow or shine it ain’t just gotta be screwed
Just feed it the right food
Create the right environment
Administer a bit of discipline
Those rough edges will need less ironing

Being us it’s an in-fighting thing
Yet one we share with society is that
It’s scary that parent’s don’t even want to be parents
Rather children make an appearance in county court has new talent
We fed fire, get blackened, our George just lost to the dragon
I crack my egg in your basket stir in the mind of a mad man
Call on the piper of Hamlyn to fight the piper of gangland
Imagine taking some action, eschewing predator fashion
Beating kids at home so teachers don’t have to
It’s time to embrace humanity
Not everything need be coloured black true?
Seems all learn to smile so sweetly while privately hating you.
So being true to myself sometimes feels like pay per view
Tell me who got tha props.
