PoArtry – The Enforcer

Artwork by Derek Baker.
Poem based on the Image

I twist caps just to hit rats

Takes balls to have a racket, I prefer brick bats

More flaps than Barbour jackets when I’m packing

All gravy when I’m chip stacking

Poker face play the big blind

Take the biscuit and leave the cracker lacking

No slacking, I stick and move, more weight than body shamed youth

Move muted as abusive twitter mentions

Only need planning permission when the scope is extended

Pay up, it’s the best way to end this

Otherwise, it’s red dot on all offenders

I’m a debt collector not a death clock

Ain’t a portrait with my head shot!

Bow!!!

If you heard that, nurse that or it’ll be a bittersweet symphony, where’s your verve at?

I exorcise where you work at.

My nines take lives I wish they were cats

You don’t want those problems

I blew veins for the cheese like I had a dare me intolerance

This ain’t the kind of mud you want to wallow in

What’s the point of debt if the last you have left is the time and air you’re borrowing?

This is the kind of wisdom that would have Solomon swallowing

Pay day is May Day and my steel will steal away with no alarm no caution

Green light on a red head that doesn’t heed a warning.

Bring the heat to your world like I was global warming.

Take your girl and your son cos I’m a knight that doesn’t need her morning.

If you never rolled the dice I wouldn’t have arrived to leave your soul on ice.

Say goodnight and hello to Bruce Forsyth

It was nice to see you, nice.

PoArtry – Pint of Punch

Image: Friday Pay Packet by Derek Baker. – poetry based on the image.

Friday night’s for fighting

It’s Rose and crown vs canvas and brush

Scholar’s on tap to summon the black hats

Will it be brother or blood?

Emerald eyes smell fear and loathing

A chalice of malice passes like communion wine

For a sack of coal you can be out cold

Friday nights are Christmas time

It’s their round for a pound

Two squares stand up to box

Two circle to try angles

A proposal of hunters with no fox

Who will reach the engine room?

Who will smash the crown jewels?

Can Don the diamond produce a shiner or will the piper play the fool?

These two are a blue moon rising

Wolves howling about spilled pints, trodden toes and their rights

Spaces invaded, the only white flags are from those on the side

Wishing it was Saturday.

PoArtry: Round 2

Create and Share with the World, a cliche I co-opted from a commentator on the Playstation 2 Game NBA Street 2. For all it’s misplaced addition to the world of street basketball, it is one that I’ve held dear ever since. One that drives me to seek out collaborative spaces and opportunities.

With PoArtry I would be randomly paired with an artist then given three months to create a piece of poetry based on one of their existing works and vice versa. A 10 day exhibition would take place which included a dedicated poetry reading. I’ve now entered two of these projects, the latter which finished on 10th February 2020 being tied into a literature festival.

The beauty and ugliness of art is laid bare by the fluidity of interpretation. I can honestly say that I did not know what to expect when I was paired with either artist. Both were stylistic wildcards that meshed with my contrarian tendencies. I was therefore excited when I started to rifle through their work.

Although both artists took the same approach in picking elements from my poems rather than focusing on the larger concepts, they yielded rather different results. Some may say this is to be expected because people are people. What happens when the artist’s explanation of their output runs in opposition to the poet’s convictions or vice versa? Do you acknowledge the piece for what it is or try to change the narrative?

When I consider how Derek who interpreted my poem described it, there is a delicious irony in the contrast between my message and real life vs the illustration in which I could easily be the villain of the piece.

I choose to let art be art. I choose to find common ground between the truths I subscribe to and those of others. As I learn, I find new streams of inspiration.

I challenged myself to submit to the art rather than make the art bend to my penmanship. I hoped that this time, the longest conversation wouldn’t just be at the initial stages of pairing or selection of work to use. I hoped that the artist wouldn’t just give me a polite hello on the launch night but (to this day) never acknowledge my contribution to the collaboration.

I wonder if things would have turned out differently had we had meatier conversations. It’s possible that everything or maybe nothing would have changed.

Ultimately I wrote two poems and inspired a piece of art that went on sale for £450. To buy all 3 pieces of art would have cost you close to £1200. The feedback from both Derek and others was incredibly positive. Although I wonder what a more traditional artist would create from my work, I am more than happy with what was done and hope to do many more.

Odd Future

They said I got a future, odd future gonna kill them all
Advice to ghettoise me, council hall
Playing a game, lacrosse, when they know I can ball
Don’t want to give the drummer some, it ain’t how they roll
All souped to speed past, it’s how they bowl
Call it autumn strike rate, my pedest fall
I’m red and sore, my head is raw
I’m not lion rich, I am bear paw
This eagle saw his eagle claw
Sharpened up his iron to blind them with a metaphor
It was cheesy season, like pizza breeze
Sold him every reason, one word sale of the 7 C’s
So he believes, he found his level,
Etched a sound, got an echo
Stamping ground, found a gecko
Angel in plain clothes, wrestled a devil
Took his head off, wouldn’t let go,
Decapitated, he was animated, selling vision
Restless chicken, he was built for giving
Resurrection, better living
This blessing was, born for stretching
That it did, yet the season stressed him
He got a taste, kept the bottle
American Histoy X’d him, full throttle
Called this apostle Chipotle flavoured Aristotle
Exotic carb the damned falafel too sweet to waffle,
Pigged out on truffles, learned to love the troubles
Hand n’ Heart like the Williams Sisters, Power doubles
Still its my level, not my arena, let me reign, I’ll bring Katrina
I need no pre-nup,
Caretaker climb, I only clean up
Yes they slimed me, Ghostbusters
Me myself and I, family trusts us
To make nice, this odd future
Tie love creation, karma’s suitors
To get it in, tailor Karma Sutra
To Make Life this odd future

The Couch

The Stronger my Ambition
Longer, harder the Journey is
Soul searching and Journal this
Researching like journalists
Heat Seeker arsenal I’m Sparring and spurning less
Boxing and Jarring yes
Spurring I’m arming best
Practice see there’s no white harte in this lane

Kill it not martyr lest
I barter my art in jest
Gold pounding my heart in chest
Treasure the hearty blessed
Moments so hard to get
Love keeps the heart in check
For wisdom boxed clever preserving this tardy wreck
Just tryin to keep my chart erect
Veering from why I’m elect
See rapping’s just a window pain
My life ain’t mete to burden blame when
will of the weak murders the profane

P.I. Like magnum ice
Want a shot of me pay the price
Toxic bars like Britney vice
Click clacking that’s just my type
Boom Bap’s just how it rides
3 syl a barrel sir name with a faction that factors Christ
Mack 10s grown over night
Celebrity is rolling dice
Pack of cards and poker nights
The house only wins if you control it right

Too many understand with their oversight
Clean off their soap boxes cos flow exposed their hype
Truth is a Thunder Bird, Parker bowling right
Solar rolled insight,
Capitalist phoenix parolled to light
Fallow fields, prodigal coals alike
Modal classic souls like me are sewn to write
Review the menu, choose a thought to bite
A taste to fight, feed a mind aka an appetite
See this skinny man’s living as he flicks out rhymes
I’m just Advised to Inspire, counsellor’s state of mind
